How Web Design Is Changing: Trends & Technology

In the online world, your homepage is the digital version of a brick-and-mortar storefront. Your business’ first impression must establish trust, credibility, and authority. Since web users abandon unappealing sites in as little as three seconds, it’s vital that your online presence is crisp and attractive. By reviewing the latest web design trends below, you can make the best impression possible:

  • Responsive design: This is the ability for a website to adapt to the device on which it is accessed. For example, your webpage will be shown in a different resolution on a desktop than a smart phone. Responsive web design is becoming more important as mobile browsing surpasses desktop internet browsing.
  • Grid layouts: Grid formatting condenses information in an easy to read and skim layout. Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, and most online catalogues are organized in a grid style.
  • Flatness: Since Apple released iOS7, flat design, use of shadows, rounded corners, and other visual effects have become commonplace on the internet. Many people are attracted to the clean look of flat styling.
  • Untraditional fonts: Web designers are adding new styles of typography to make the site stand out from others with traditional fonts such as Arial or Times New Roman. Font styles that are new and out of the ordinary make visitors more inclined to explore the site and see what the webpage has to say.  Be sure should avoid hard to read fonts!
  • Intro videos: Many websites are opting for a video on their intro page instead of text. Videos give all of the information an introductory paragraph would but in a more active form that appeals to the preference for watching and listening to media over reading.  It is important to consider page load time when adding video, however.
  • Simplicity: Minimalist navigation and simplified designs let visitors find what they want quickly and efficiently. These new forms of web navigation are the most popular trends on the web today. Websites with simple designs and compelling and straightforward content are becoming more popular. Simple color schemes are also popular. In the end, internet users prefer efficiency and minimalist navigation to meet their expectations.
  • Storytelling design: Websites that tell stories and keep visitors engaged and interested add value and intrigue to their business. Make the website fun, using powerful images and short, but compelling, content to keep the reader wanting more information about your website and your company.
  • Infographics: The best way to disseminate information for a contemporary audience is through infographics. This practices allow designers to present a large amount of information in a small space and are sure to catch the eye of viewers.
