The way we do commerce has changed significantly over the past two decades. Small businesses can affordably set up shop online to sell their wares. Most e-commerce packages available, including WP E-commerce, Woo Commerce, VirtueMart, Magento, etc., offer the ability to track stock or inventory levels for products you sell. Increasingly, companies are drop shipping products direct from the supplier or selling products without first having them in inventory.
Inevitably, if you’re in the business of drop shipping, you will be forced to find a way track what your suppliers’ inventory is. Many suppliers provide their distributors/retailers with a regular data feed (in CSV or XML form) that includes quantity in stock for each item SKU. When you first set up shop, you might elect to just update inventory by hand once or twice weekly from the spreadsheet they supply.
The smarter way is to have your e-commerce shop inventory automatically updated from the data feed file. MetroMediaWorks has written code that updates inventory counts for a variety of e-commerce packages (such as WP E-Commerce and WooCommerce) from a variety of different data feed types. The typical cost to do this is less than $500 (one-time). If you’re interested in having a data feed integration written for your e-commerce web site, contact us.
